The business began in 1922 as Lipscomb Electric when Henry Lipscomb opened shop on Lemon Street. He later moved to Tennessee Avenue before constructing two quonset huts on Ingraham Avenue in the late 1940s. In the early 1950s, he built a concrete block building at 230 N. Ingraham Avenue and moved the electric company next to the huts.

E. Harold Wilson, who started working at Lipscomb Electric at age 16, purchased the company in 1960 and renamed it Wilson Electric Company. The business has remained at the same Ingraham Avenue location ever since, becoming a Lakeland institution.
