Company Background

Niobrara Valley Electric Membership Corporation (NVE) is your locally-owned electric cooperative serving the O'Neill community and surrounding Holt County. Founded in 1945, we operate on a cooperative model, meaning we are owned and governed by the members we serve through a nine-member, locally-elected Board of Directors. Our team manages over 2,680 miles of power lines to deliver reliable electricity to more than 5,600 meters. As a not-for-profit, our focus is on providing essential utility services, including online bill payment and net metering, while reinvesting excess revenue back into the local grid and member-owner communities. We're here to help O'Neill residents with everything from starting service and managing accounts to addressing outages and ensuring the safety and efficiency of your electrical connections.

FAQs

What should I do if I'm buying an older home in O'Neill and am concerned about the wiring?

It's wise to be proactive. Aging wiring in older homes can be a safety concern. We recommend contacting a licensed, local electrician for a thorough inspection. For our part, NVE can perform a service inspection to ensure the meter base and the connection from our lines to your home are safe and up to current code. This is an important first step to ensure your home's electrical system is ready for reliable service.

How does the cooperative model benefit me as an NVE member in Holt County?

As a member-owner, you're part of a locally-governed utility focused on service, not profits. Any excess revenue after covering costs is returned to members as capital credits. Our nine-member Board of Directors, elected from within our service area, makes decisions with the local community's best interests in mind. This model keeps rates stable and ensures investments are made directly back into maintaining and improving our local electrical infrastructure.

I'm noticing my outlets are warm to the touch. Is this something NVE can check?

Overheated outlets are a serious safety issue that should be addressed immediately. While the wiring inside your home is the homeowner's responsibility, NVE can inspect the service connection and meter for any external issues that might contribute to the problem. We strongly advise you to also contact a qualified electrician to inspect the internal wiring and outlets in your home to prevent a potential fire hazard.
