Q&A

How does the apprenticeship program prepare someone to perform an electrical inspection?

Our five-year program provides the foundational knowledge required for proper electrical inspections. Apprentices receive in-depth classroom instruction on the National Electrical Code (NEC), which is the standard for safe electrical design and installation. This is paired with hands-on, supervised job site experience where they learn to identify proper wiring methods, grounding, and load calculations. By graduation, students have the technical understanding and practical skills to assess electrical systems for code compliance, safety, and functionality, which is essential for conducting thorough inspections.

My pool equipment's wiring has been problematic. How would a graduate from your program address this common Jacksonville issue?

Pool wiring faults are a specific safety concern we address in training due to Jacksonville's climate and many residential pools. Our curriculum covers the NEC requirements for outdoor and wet locations, including proper grounding, GFCI protection, and corrosion-resistant materials. A graduate would be trained to diagnose issues like faulty connections, improper bonding, or damaged conduit, and to perform repairs that prioritize safety and long-term durability in our humid environment.

What are the long-term career benefits after completing this apprenticeship?

Graduates become journeyman electricians with a portable, nationally recognized credential. Beyond immediate employment opportunities, the program provides a significant advantage for career advancement. You'll earn college credits applicable toward an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in fields like Industrial Management Technology, opening paths to project management, estimating, or training roles. Being part of the IBEW/NECA network also provides access to continuous education and a strong professional community throughout your career.

Our Story

The Electrical Training Alliance of Jacksonville is a five-year apprenticeship program designed to build the next generation of skilled electricians for the Jacksonville area. Affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), this program offers a direct pathway into a stable, in-demand trade. Apprentices gain practical, on-the-job experience during the day while attending classroom instruction two nights a week, covering critical subjects like the National Electrical Code, safety protocols, and advanced installation techniques. Graduates not only earn industry-recognized certifications but also receive college credits that can be applied toward degrees at Florida State College of Jacksonville or Valdosta State University. By focusing on comprehensive, hands-on training, the Alliance ensures its graduates are prepared to meet the electrical needs of Jacksonville homes and businesses with competence and professionalism.
